artlocal 21 Presents: A Night of Poetry Readings

I’ll be reading under Cassandra Cronenberg-Hunter’s Banner of artlocal 21 tomorrow night (Saturday, June 27) at The Department Gallery Mainspace (1389 Dundas Street West between Dovercourt and Dufferin). The Doors open at 6 pm and Sam Cheuk will be hosting. Here’s the full line-up:

7 pm – Sandy Pool
8 pm – Jim Johnstone
9 pm – Al Moritz

I’m truly thrilled to be reading with both Sandy and Al, and am grateful to Sam for setting this up. He’s practically my pimp.

bpNichol Chapbook Award Winners

I’d like to congratulate the winners of the 2009 bpNichol Chapbook Award: Gary Barwin (Inverting the Deer) and Sandra Ridley (Lift: Ghazals for C). It’s strange to me how little press surrounds this award – I was hard pressed to find any mention of the winners online when I returned from cottaging this week. The organizers have done a wonderful job of increasing the annual prize money ($1000 each to the winners), which actually equals what is given out to Gerald Lampert Memorial Award Winners for the best first-book of Canadian Poetry.

Also, check out Ray Hsu on EC’s Desk Space this week. Ray kicks ass.

Trillium Winners

The 2009 Trillium Book Award winners were announced today. Congratulations to Pasha Malla and Jeramy Dodds who were named the winners of the 2009 Trillium Book Award and 2009 Trillium Book Award for Poetry, respectively.

Speaking of Jeramy Dodds, I recently stumbled upon a terrific review of Crabwise to the Hounds by Jeff Latosik on the new Mansfield Press site. Check it out here. It’s also worth looking for Shane Neilson’s review of the same book in the latest issue of Arc for an entirely different, and perhaps more critically relevant, perspective.

Invertebrate Poems in enRoute

My Invertebrate Poems can be found in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine this month, and have been posted on the enRoute website as well.

Here’s a sample of the accompanying artwork by Takashi Iwasaki.
